Five Ways to Reduce AGI and Boost Tax Breaks

  1. Contribute the maximum amount allowed to a 401(k), 403(b), 457 or other similar retirement plan. This reduces your wages while providing important savings for your retirement.
  2. Contribute to an HSA for medical and/or dependent care. This enables you to pay for medical and/or dependent care costs on a pretax basis while reducing AGI.
  3. Harvest capital losses. These losses can be used to offset capital gains and then up to $3,000 of ordinary income. Any capital losses in excess of these offsets can be carried forward.
  4. Take above-the-line deductions. Deductions for contributions to traditional IRAs, health savings accounts, and self-employed retirement plans are just a few of the ways to achieve personal savings and tax advantage.
